Pinshape is a website that is designed to allow you to share your 3D models, download and print other peoples 3D models. It has been around for a couple years now and has started to accumulate its own user base as it allows its members to do things that many other 3D model sharing sites don’t provide as tools.
The biggest difference between Pinshape and Thingiverse is that Pinshape allows users to post content with a download fee. This isn’t a bad thing like some people immediately may think as it creates incentive for the 3D modelers who create something to make it great so the next person doesn’t have to model it from scratch. This is great for small useful parts that people need frequently but never have the time to design. Having the ability to print a high quality file for a small price makes it almost like the iTunes of 3D modelling.
A second great feature is the ability to stream prints. This is done through 3DPrinterOS and allows you to choose your setting, slice your file and get your print file all using their web based interface. This is an awesome feature for designers who want to promote and distribute their content but still protect the original 3D model by keeping it out of the end-users hands. The biggest downside we see here is that it makes modifying the designs impossible and may discourage users from printing a model as it would be seen as temporary access to the file.
Overall it is a very easy to navigate website that offers some great features. They also post weekly staff-picked prints which is a great source for ideas of what to print next. We highly recommend you check out their website.
